On Thursday 6 May, voters in 125 council areas around England will elect councillors.
Councils are responsible for enforcing safety standards in private rented homes, preventing illegal evictions and stopping landlords and letting agents from mistreating their tenants. So these elections are a huge chance for renters to demand a better deal from local councillors and councils.
We want councils to do more to license local landlords, take real action when tenants are living in dangerous homes, and improve how they communicate with renters to raise awareness of their rights and how to exercise them.
We want council candidates to pledge to:
- Always take action to protect renters living in unsafe homes
- Be a champion for renters within their local authority
- Reach out and talk to renters in their ward about the issues they face
